Discover Tallinn on your own or join the guided tours in Tallinn
Tallinn, whose name is often linked to the phrase “Danish Town” (in Estonian: Taani Linn), was granted town rights in 1248. As an important member of the Hanseatic League, the city played a key role in trade and defence throughout the centuries. Its history stretches back even further, shaped by a unique location between East and West. Tallinn’s natural coastline provided ideal conditions for harbours and maritime trade, making it one of the northernmost ports with year-round shipping access.
This strategic position brought both prosperity and hardship. Over the centuries, Tallinn has been ruled by Danes, Germans, Swedes, Russians — yet the city and its people have preserved their identity and resilience.
Today, Tallinn is a vibrant modern capital known for its creative atmosphere, innovative spirit, and attractive seaside setting, the Northern Tallinn. At its heart lies the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town, one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Europe.
Tallinn also offers an abundance of parks, seaside promenades, and green spaces, each with its own unique atmosphere to explore. Wander through the city at your own pace or take advantage of the free public transportation pass provided to all MIE2027 participants, making it easy to discover the many different faces of Tallinn.
